Although the shortest day in the calendar sneaks in just a few days before Christmas, it's the bleak days of January that always seem hardest to endure. Though let's face it, January has the odds stacked against it for a number of reasons!
Natural light often seems weak and flat and doesn't hang about long, with the gloom seeping in from the middle of the afternoon.
Whilst it might indeed make you feel like hibernating until the spring, brighten up! A simple solution really does exists. Creating layers of light is the most effective way to build sufficient luminosity in your living room and brightness for the bedroom, transforming your home into the cosy, tranquil haven you crave.
Pendants are still a popular choice for strong directional light in living and dining spaces and are indeed a smart option as they can take up very little space (good for narrow or cluttered spaces) and can be used flexibly depending on ceiling height.
Our current favourite in this category is the COLLECT lighting series from Ferm LIVING. The epitome of adaptability, the socket pendant comes with three metres of fabric covered electrical cord and pendants in a number of gorgeous colours. The series is made up of a number of interchangeable parts which are as beautiful to look at as they are easy to assemble. As with every Nordic brand we stock, the design is always as clever as it is stylish. The pendants can be paired with a range of different shades in different shapes and colours and all are white inside to ensure optimal light reflection. Brilliant right?
The right mood lighting can also transform a living space with the flick of a switch. Floor and table lamps can add much needed warmth to the room creating a soft glow that can take the edge of the gloom without it feeling like the night has drawn in completely. We love the Carmina (see image at top of this post) and Silvia (below) lamps from Vita Copenhagen for their mesmerising shape which is very cleverly designed to create a little ball of light without exposing the eye to the direct glare of a bulb. And these little beauties could also masquerade as works of art when not in use. They also come flat-packed in incredibly small, light boxes.
A totally different view-point is possible when it comes to bedroom lighting. This is where you can really have some fun. For grown-ups, we suggest the Eos range from Vita copenhagen. It's super stylish (and very easy to look after -just a blast with your hairdryer keeps those feathers in perfect condition) and works as either bedside lights or suspended from the ceiling like a little ray of radiance. There is simply nothing cheerier.
And a touch of extra cheer might just be the ticket to getting your little ones off to sleep more easily which is where the Ferm LIVING Cloud Lamp could help. It's a gorgeous little piece that blends beauty and style - suitable for both tiny tots and style-conscious teens.
So let the night draw in this January. You have everything you need to need to bring the light back in.
